Rocket Building Project
There are a lot of developments which have been seen in the rocket creation process. The building of rockets is a sensitive issue because of the materials which are used to build rockets. These are the same materials which are used to build bombs. This is sensitive for security reasons. The history of developing rockets can be traced to China where the Chinese developed rockets which were powered chemically. The current rockets can be attributed to Kibaltchich. This paper will focus on the development of rockets with the use of Alka-Seltzer which represents a simple step which can be carried out at home and in a physics laboratory.
For the development of Alka-Seltzer rocket, there is a need to have the following requirements:
- Empty canister
- Sugarless water
- Template of rocket which has been printed in a hard piece of paper
- Stop watch
The procedure for building an Alka-Seltzer rocket will include having the template printed on a hard piece of paper. This paper is designed so that it fits a 35mm film canister. After this, there will be the cutting along the solid lines. The canister is then folded along the lines and then they are put by tape into place. After this, Alka-Seltzer is then put into the paper that has been printed (Atlantaquaria 72). The paper that should be followed and acts as the template for the rocket is shown in the diagram that follows. After this, there will be the addition of approximately one centimeter of water to the Alka-Seltzer. After the addition of the two substances, the canister will then be sealed. Care should be taken so that there is no air entering the canister. The canister is then put so that it lies upside down on a flat surface.
In the experiment, there is violent reaction between water and the Alka-Seltzer tablet. There is the release of carbon-dioxide. With the tight lid in place, there is the trapping of carbon-dioxide gas in the canister. With time, there will be due pressure building inside the canister, and there will be violent opening of the lid because of the pressure which has built. The pressure will push the canister with force to space which is the action of a rocket (Roth, and Helen 82).
Requirements for optimal results
For success to be realized, the lid to the canister should be as tight as possible so that there is no air entering the canister. This will enable the propulsion to take place effectively. Another thing is that there should be proper cleaning of the lid and the cap of the canister so that there are no errors which might be introduced to the experiment.
After the experiment, it is clear that hot water is effective when compared to cold water. This is because of the fact that hot water takes less time to react than cold water. Another finding is that there is violent reaction between Alka-Seltzer and water. This was evident in the fact that immediately there was the addition of water there was a violent reaction.
In the experiment, there is the production of carbon dioxide when water and Alka-Seltzer are added together. Trapping carbon dioxide gas in a tight place brings about pressure which brings about the rocket process.
