How to Come up with English Project Topics for College Students?
To hand in a compelling project, you have got to select the right topic. Start by coming up with some questions you have about the field you are studying. They can be broad; they can be specific. Just make a list of a question you personally want to know the answers to. For example, what is the reason that it is so hard for foreign students to study English? How to do it in the most efficient way? Why do we pronounce a four-letter word “your” using just two sounds?
The next step is to start narrowing down one of the selected project topics in English. The broader the question, the harder it will be to answer. Compare two questions – what is bilingual education and what are the ways we can use our bilingual education? Answering the second question, you definitely know that there is a clear-cut list of ways, while to answer on what bilingual education is much harder.
Research of a Topic
Now, it is time for research. Use Google Scholar, do not despise a good old library, jot down some of the cited sources in the relevant papers list. Start learning from the sources, try to make generalizations, take different ideas from different sources and put them together in a way that no one has thought of before. Then you have to create a thesis for your topic based on the data. Your goal at this stage is to get something super basic. Once you have got a functional baseline, you can get creative.
The next step is to start writing the outline. Look at papers related to your thesis and see what kind of subsections they have listed. So, create a list of subsections that are a generalized form of the related materials. It will be your first draft. All you need to do after is to read it, then read it one more time, and read it again.
Generally, the format of your project should start with a title, then an abstract which will summarize your work. Then, there is an introduction with your motivations and background data. Body paragraphs will document your research process , including your research results. Finally, a conclusion will show whether the research project objectives have been met.
How to Analyze a Topic
To make a qualitative project, follow not by subjective opinion, but by certain criteria.
The first step is to thoroughly read all the sources, which means reading two times in order to fully understand what is being said. Write notes while reading it, use highlights. You want to annotate, you want to make this an active process.
Be sure to identify the thesis and purpose. Write down the main points and ideas. What it is that you are trying to argue? Make your own opinion about the sources of information as a whole, along with justification for such an opinion around the argument that is has been laid. How you correlate that with what you understand about the topic?
You need to make connections with what you are learning in the course. Compare the ideas and thoughts that you have been exposed to in the course with what you see in the book/article/essay. Explore how the author addresses any particular concepts and topics. Assess the author’s notes in the bibliography. Consider the research and material the author used in composing her/his work. Look at what kind of primary and secondary sources does this author use. Here it is all about the details. Pay attention to the right use of the terms.
Basic Components of All of the Project Topics for English Language
Starting your project with a question is always a good idea. It will draw the audience into the work. For example, have you ever listened to a song and ended up smiling for no reason? It is because of the lyrics’ power to instantly transform you back in time. So, by that, you are setting up the message or the focus of the project talking about lyrics and their meaning.
In the main part, you can put tons of information but still, you need to have a general focus on the paragraph. Do not put unrelated ideas because the audience won’t be able to follow your train of thoughts and logic. Make it flow. You can do it in several ways by using subheadings, bullets, and numbers. Ideally, your ending, your last sentence ties back to your first sentence or to the introduction paragraph. That way you have a complete circle and it ties a topic together.
